AKAMAS PENINSULA
National Park

AKAMAS PENINSULA

The park is situated on the west coast of the island and covers an area of 230 square kilometers. These include unique beaches, valleys and canyons and are inhabited by rare wildlife species essential for the ecology balance of the Mediterranean. The breathtaking grounds give home to 168 categories of birds, 12 different breeds of mammals, 16 varieties of butterflies and 20 different kinds of reptiles, as well as an exceptional collection of flora. The importance of the Akamas Peninsula has been recognized by the European Council and is part of the Mediterranean Protection Programme even though it has not yet been fully declared as a National Park by the Cyprus Government. This is mainly due to reasons related to local landowners and tourism nevertheless, Environmental Organizations are exerting pressure in that direction.

BLUE LAGOON

Blue Lagoon is the most famous and well-known area of the peninsula attracting thousands of visitors by boat due to its unique crystal-clear waters and exceptional surroundings. The clarity of the waters allows you to explore the sea bed and allures you to take a refreshing swim or snorkel dive to enjoy the underwater sea life for meters on end.

LARA BEACH

This beach is accessible by a 4X4 vehicle from Pegia and Agios Georgios. Its crystal-clear waters and dazzling golden sands make it rare while it offers a long expansive and clean beach which is almost deserted. It is the breeding ground for endangered species such as the Green Turtle and the Hawk’s Bill Turtle with Environmental Organizations making every effort to provide safe sites for their egg laying.

It is surrounded by impressive rocks and cliffs which at some points reach a height of 260 feet and with the narrowest point being 10 feet wide. While exploring the gorge, visitors will find scarce and unique flowers, plants and wild life species such as rare reptiles and wild mountain goats.

BATHS OF APHRODITE

These are found around 18 kilometers from Paphos. They consist of a natural shallow pool situated in a cave which is surrounded by natural vegetation, ferns and a huge fig tree. Water is constantly poured into the pool from a natural spring and according to the legend, Aphrodite the Goddess of Love used to take her baths at this spot and this is where she met her great love, Adonis. The legend supports that the waters hold an invigorating and regenerating strength.
